Siblings of autistic children and adolescents
Siblings may experience affection, pride, curiosity, frustration, jealousy, worry or responsibility. Their needs deserve space without turning them into substitute caregivers.
Give age-appropriate information
Explain autism in clear language and answer questions honestly. Information can reduce confusion and help siblings understand differences without treating the autistic child as a problem.
Protect the sibling relationship
- Create opportunities for shared activities without forcing interaction
- Avoid comparing children or using one as a model for the other
- Make room for each child’s individual interests and time with caregivers
- Do not place adult caregiving responsibilities on siblings
- Recognize that mixed feelings are normal and can coexist with affection
Listen for overload
Persistent anxiety, sleep changes, withdrawal, school difficulties, intense guilt or fear deserve attention. Siblings may also need emotional support or professional assessment depending on impact.
Think about the future without assigning a destiny
Families can discuss future care and support networks over time, but siblings should not be told that they will automatically become the primary caregiver. Planning should include the autistic person’s voice, broader support networks and realistic responsibilities.
Educational content for families. Every sibling relationship is different; support should be adapted to age, family context and each child’s needs.
