Seizures, behavior and sensory processing at school

When a student screams, runs away, drops to the floor, refuses activities or needs to leave the classroom, the useful question is not only “how do we make it stop?”. Context, communication, safety and barriers need to be understood.

Behavior carries information

The same behavior can happen for different reasons. Communication, task difficulty, predictability, attention, access to something important, pain, sleep, the environment and overload may all be relevant. Avoid assuming function without adequate observation and assessment.

The school environment can increase load

Bells, playgrounds, cafeterias, simultaneous voices, lines, unexpected touch, lighting and classroom changes may matter for some students. Sensory adaptations should be individualized and support participation rather than permanent isolation.

What the team can observe and document

What happened before the crisis or before the student left the room?
Was there a change, waiting period, difficult task, conflict or interruption of an activity?
Was the environment noisier, more crowded, brighter or more unpredictable?
Did the person have an accessible way to request a break, help, water, the bathroom or to leave?
Are there signs of pain, insufficient sleep, hunger, illness or other discomfort?
What helped the person recover regulation and how much time was needed?

Prevention before a crisis

Understandable routines, accessible communication, advance notice of changes, ways to request help or a break, task adjustments and identification of environmental barriers can reduce overload. These reviewed strategies should be part of educational planning and according to the student’s response.

Safety without improvised restraint

Projeto Acolher TEA does not teach families or educators to perform physical restraint. Risk situations require institutional protocols, appropriately trained professionals and individualized assessment. Clinical emergencies or severe risks require appropriate emergency services.
