Psychomotricity and autism
Psychomotricity considers the relationship between body, movement, emotion, cognition and interaction. Activities should have clear functional goals and be adapted to each person rather than applied as a universal protocol.
What may be observed
- Balance and postural control
- Gross and fine motor coordination
- Body awareness and body schema
- Laterality and spatial orientation
- Timing and organization of movement
- Participation in play and everyday motor activities
Movement should support participation
The goal is not to make movements look “normal.” Assessment should consider how motor and body-related factors affect play, self-care, school, leisure, social participation and quality of life.
Play and meaningful activity
Games and movement activities may be used to explore coordination, planning, turn-taking, body awareness and enjoyment. Choice, motivation and the person’s interests should guide participation.
Interdisciplinary work
Depending on the person’s needs, psychomotor work may interface with physical therapy, occupational therapy, education, psychology and other fields. Professional roles should remain clear and coordinated.
When assessment may help
Seek individualized assessment when motor or body-related difficulties limit safety, autonomy, participation, learning or daily activities.
