Psychological Support for Caregivers

Pathways to emotional support, mental health care and social assistance for caregivers, with guidance to confirm the services available in each municipality.

CAPS — Psychosocial Care Center

A public mental health service within Brazil’s public health system, especially for people experiencing severe psychological distress. Different CAPS modalities exist depending on the population served and local network organization.

How to access

It is possible to go directly to a CAPS in your area for an initial assessment without a previously scheduled appointment. The team assesses needs and, when CAPS is not the appropriate service, should coordinate care with another point in the network.

Contact

Contact your Municipal Health Department to locate the nearest unit.

UBS — Primary Health Care Unit

Primary care is the main entry point to Brazil’s public health system and also addresses mental health needs. The team can assess needs, provide care within the unit and coordinate referrals when necessary.

How to access

Contact the primary care unit responsible for your area and explain the need for care. Required documents and pathways may vary by municipality.

CRAS — Social Assistance Reference Center

A social assistance unit that may offer reception, guidance and referrals to services and benefits according to the family’s situation and local rules.

How to access

Contact the CRAS responsible for your area to learn about available social assistance services.

Contact

Contact your Municipal Social Assistance Department.

Online Support Networks

Online communities can offer peer support and shared experiences, but they do not replace professional care. Avoid sharing diagnostic reports, personal data, medications or other sensitive information in public groups.

When looking for groups or online profiles, check who is responsible for the content, what sources are used, and whether professionals state their training and professional registration when applicable.

⚠️

Important notice: Information about public services may vary by region. Confirm availability and local pathways in your city. CVV provides emotional support by calling 188 in Brazil; situations requiring immediate care should be evaluated by an emergency service.
