Identification Lanyards and Symbols
Understand the difference between social identification symbols and those recognized under Brazilian law. Use, meaning and acceptance can vary among people and communities.
Sunflower Lanyard
Meaning
In Brazil, the sunflower-patterned lanyard is recognized by federal law as a symbol for people with hidden disabilities.
Purpose
It may be used voluntarily for identification. The symbol itself does not create rights, and not wearing it cannot reduce rights guaranteed by law.
Recognition
Law No. 14,624/2023. Use is optional and the lanyard does not replace proof of disability when requested by an authorized attendant or authority.
Puzzle Ribbon
Meaning
The puzzle ribbon is a symbol historically associated with autism awareness. Its meaning and acceptance vary among autistic people, families and organizations.
Purpose
Federal legislation allows certain public and private establishments to use the puzzle ribbon to identify priority service for autistic people.
Recognition
Law No. 13,977/2020 added this possibility to Law No. 12,764/2012. This does not make every commercial lanyard an official document.
Infinity Symbol
Meaning
The infinity symbol, especially multicolored or neurodiversity-related versions, is used by groups and individuals as a symbol of neurological diversity and identity.
Purpose
Its use is mainly social, community-based or identity-related and may express belonging, pride or support for neurodiversity.
Recognition
This page does not present it as a federal identification document or symbol for exercising legal priority. For formal rights, check the applicable law and required documents.
Important to know
- • Use of the sunflower lanyard is optional; not wearing it does not affect rights guaranteed by law.
- • Law No. 14,624/2023 allows proof of disability to be requested even when the sunflower lanyard is being worn.
- • The puzzle ribbon is also mentioned in federal legislation as a possible way to identify priority for autistic people in certain establishments.
- • CIPTEA, parking credentials and other documents have their own rules and should not be confused with visual symbols.
- • Identity and neurodiversity symbols do not necessarily have the same legal function as documents or symbols recognized by law.
