Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from parents and caregivers about child development and warning signs.

My child lines up toys. Does that mean autism?

Lining up toys by itself does not mean a child is autistic. Developmental assessment considers a pattern of characteristics, persistence, context and impact on daily life. If there are other concerns about communication, interaction, play or development, talk with a pediatrician.

My child avoids eye contact. Does that mean autism?

No. Differences in eye contact alone do not establish an autism diagnosis. Diagnosis considers social communication, patterns of behavior and interests, development and functioning across settings. Professional assessment can clarify concerns.

My child speaks very little. Should I seek help?

Concerns about speech, language or other forms of communication should be discussed with a pediatrician. Depending on the case, assessment may involve speech-language pathology and other professionals.

Does every very active child have ADHD?

No. Activity level or attention difficulties can occur for many reasons and also vary by age and context. ADHD requires clinical assessment and should not be diagnosed from a single behavior.

Does every rigid or defiant child have ODD?

No. Rigidity, opposition or conflict with rules can occur for many reasons. Behavioral diagnoses require assessment of pattern, duration, intensity, context and functional impact.

How do I know when to seek a professional?

Seek pediatric guidance whenever there are concerns about development, communication, interaction, movement, learning, behavior or autonomy. Loss of previously acquired skills deserves especially prompt attention.

My child had a delay and then caught up. Should I still be concerned?

Developmental pace can change for different reasons. Even when a skill improves, routine pediatric follow-up and discussion of persistent or new concerns remain important.

What is the difference between a tantrum and a meltdown?

These everyday terms should not be treated as simple categories with one cause. Crying, screaming, running away or aggression may relate to communication, frustration, pain, demands, routine changes, sensory overload or other factors. Prioritize safety and context.

Can my autistic child live independently in the future?

Autistic people have very different life trajectories. Some live with substantial autonomy; others need varying levels of support. Communication, health, accessibility, opportunities, environment and individual characteristics all matter.

Does Projeto Acolher provide consultations or treatment?

No. Projeto Acolher TEA is a social, educational and science-communication platform. It does not provide diagnosis, consultations, therapy, prescriptions or clinical interventions.
