Autism in adulthood: health, autonomy, work, relationships and aging

After age 18, needs do not disappear; they change. Adulthood involves decisions, participation, rights, work, housing, health, relationships, late diagnosis and long-term planning.

Diagnosis and post-diagnostic support

Some people receive an autism diagnosis in adulthood or later life. Diagnosis may bring explanation, identity and access to rights, but it does not automatically solve barriers. Post-diagnostic support can include understanding the result, communicating needs and accessing services.

Health throughout adulthood

Healthcare should include physical and mental health, sleep, nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, prevention and treatment of other conditions. Research describes barriers involving communication, sensory environments, unpredictability and limited professional knowledge about autistic adults.

Autonomy with support

Autonomy does not mean doing everything alone. Daily living, transportation, money, organization, healthcare and communication may require different levels of support. Supported decision-making should preserve the person’s participation and preferences.

Work, education and participation

Inclusive employment depends not only on individual skills but also on accessibility, clear communication, reasonable accommodations, understanding from employers and real opportunities. Participation in community, leisure and relationships also matters for quality of life.

Relationships, sexuality and protection

Autistic adults may have relationships, sexual identities and desires like anyone else. Accessible information about consent, privacy, prevention, healthy relationships and safety supports autonomy and protection.

Aging and continuity of care

Evidence on autistic aging is growing but remains limited. Current research supports monitoring physical health, cognition, sensory needs, mental health, social networks, housing and continuity of support rather than assuming that every autistic person ages faster.
